Die Kreaturen in den Bergen, The creatures of the mountains

In den letzten Tagen blieb mir nur wenig Zeit um Eintraege in mein Tagebuch zu machen, denn ich war von frueh bis abends unterwegs im Dschungel von Ceylon.

Dabei bin ich auf ausserordentlich seltsame Kreaturen gestossen, wie ich es erwartet hatte. In Kandy findet man viele Teeplantagen, die zu einem Besuch einladen. Jedoch sollte man dabei vorsichtig sein, aufgrund des giftigen Getieres, das hier sein Unwesen treibt. Dabei koennen gleich mehrere Kobras in einem Baum haengen.

Der Tee wird traditionell von Jungfrauen geerntet und danach in einem bis zu 20kg schweren Sack zur Fabrik geschafft. Zum Teil ist der Tee so stark, dass man beim Trinken das Bewusstsein verliert.

In der Stadt Kandy hat man einen heiligen Tempel des Zahn errichtet. Innen gibt es riesige Elefantenzaehne zu sehen. Man nutzt diesen Tempel hauptsaechlich um die Leute daran zu erinnern sich morgens und abends die Zaehne zu putzen. Der Tempel wird von Fledermaeusen beherrscht, die jeden Abend zu tausenden vom Wald in den Tempel fliegen, was nachteilig ist, denn wenn man den Tempel betritt darf mein keine Schuhe tragen.

Ich konnte Frau Liyanage (die Hotelbesitzerin) davon ueberzeugen sich von mir zeichnen zu lassen. Die meisten Leute hier sehen ihr sehr aehnlich und laechseln die ganze Zeit, wie man in der Zeichnung perfekt sehen kann. Die Zahnluecke laesst darauf schliessen dass sie nicht allzu oft den Tempel des Zahn besucht.

Nun bleiben nur noch wenige Stunden hier in den Bergen, bevor es weiter nach Mount Lavinia an der Kueste geht.

August 22nd.

I had little time over the last few days to make further entries into my diary due to being in the jungle of Ceylon permanently.

During that time I saw many strange creatures, just as I expected. There are numerous tea plantations in Kandy, which were inviting. But you have to be careful, due to the venomous animals in the bush and prepare for the possibility of many cobras hanging down from a single tree.

The tea leaves are traditionally picked by virgins. They carry up to 20kg of heavy bags to the nearby factory. The tea itself can be so strong that a human can even pass out after drinking it.

In the city of Kandy is the holy Temple of the Tooth. Inside it’s possible to spot large elephant teeth. This temple is mainly used to remind the people to brush their teeth in the morning and in the evening. The temple itself is ruled by bats, which are coming every evening in large quantities into the holy area. It is a disadvantage, taking in consideration that you have to walk barefoot while visiting the temple.

I convinced Mrs. Liyanage (owner of the hotel) to allow me to paint her. Most of the people here look similar to her and they all have a smile all the time, as it is shown in my painting perfectly. From the gaps in her teeth you can see that she does not visit the temple frequently.

I have just a couple of hours in the mountain, before I travel to the coastal town of Mount Lavinia.
